ARC FLASH ANALYSIS AND CONSULTING

An arc flash is a phenomenon where a flashover of electric current leaves its intended path and travels through the air from one conductor to another or to ground.(1) Arc flash can reach temperatures of 35,000°F causing substantial damage, harm, fire, and/or injury.

Our engineering professionals strive to provide consulting that minimizes risk from arc flash hazard through arc flash analysis and consulting.

ARC FLASH ANALYSIS CONSULTING SERVICES

Arc Flash Analysis Consulting Services available are listed below. Note these services can be performed utilizing owner provided data or EDi can provide field investigation services to gather the required information.

  1. Short Circuit Calculations – Perform amps interrupting current fault calculations to identify bolted and arcing fault levels at key points in the power distribution system.
  2. Protective Device Coordination – Perform coordination studies to determine over-current settings of protection devices to minimize the duration of arcing faults.
  3. Arc Flash Hazard Calculations – Perform Arc Flash calculations to determine the incident energy level, flash hazard boundary, and PPE required at each distribution equipment location.
  4. Documentation – Completion of a comprehensive report containing all necessary information to comply with regulatory requirements.
  5. Unsafe Work Locations – Identification of distribution locations having incident energy level in excess of available PPE ratings.
  6. Arc Flash Hazard Mitigation – Recommendations to minimize Arc Flash Hazards in system protection or operational procedures.
  7. Arc Flash Hazard Labels – Adhesive Label to be applied by to distribution equipment. The labels will indicate the flash hazard boundary distance, incident energy level, PPE category and shock category / hazard for each location.

BENEFITS OF ARC FLASH ANALYSIS

  • Improved employee safety
  • Improved electrical distribution system protection
  • Provision of safety information to subcontractors
  • Assists in compliance with regulations
  • Provision of documentation that may bring about reductions in workers compensation and insurance rates

CONSIDER AN ARC FLASH ANALYSIS when…

  • Arc Flash Analysis has not been performed in over three years
  • Short-circuit protective coordination studies have not been performed in over 5 years
  • Changes have occurred to the electrical distribution system or electrical utility system
  • A safety audit is required or the facility's insurance policy is up for renewal
  • Modifications or expansions of the electrical distribution system are being considered
